Each classroom consists of many varied students with very different needs. One can discuss their stereotype as a student with disability, second language learner, gifted, but even these students are very different from one another. As a teacher in an environment with more than one student, one must be prepared for some instances, and willing to make adjustments for other needs as they present themselves. This PBL unit is designed for a resources classroom of special education students. For this reason, extended time is built into the plan for each lesson, in each day. In addition, the teacher would have to follow any specific plans as set forth in a student’s IEP, 504, or ELL plan. Generally, legislation for these specific programs require that any accommodations provided for a student for an assessment, should also be implemented during the instructional environment as well.
SWD: Students with disabilities will be paired with students who have more skill in technology while working on the computer. For longer assignments, especially where multiple skills are involved, these students often take longer to process all the diverse skills. For this reason, extended time is built into the research phase of this PBL unit.
ELL: English Language Learners exhibit varying degrees of proficiency in English. The authentic documents from the Revolutionary period will assist those who require a visual aid. For those who need audio rendering of documents, the documents can be saved as a PDF file, and read aloud using the PDF-reader. Again, working with a peer will provide some assistance to students who struggle with the language.
LS and MI: Literature and Composition class is certainly a place where written skills should be taught and polished. However, the inclusion of other learning styles and multiple intelligences are promoted through choice, reflection, and inclusion of creative presentation at the conclusion of the unit.
Gifted: Gifted students would have sufficient time to further research using any of the web sites provided, or websites of their choice. They will also be given an opportunity to express themselves in the culminating project, and advance studies in the area of formation of the Secret Service, or roles of spies during wartime.
Students lacking technology access at home: This defines most of my students; for this reason, my students are provided ample time in class to complete a given assignment. In addition, students may work after school or before school on the computers to complete work. Many of my students also have a special class entitled “study skills” where projects and assignments can be completed.
